Real Life VS The Crucible
In The Crucible John Proctor and Abigail Williams had an affair but in real life the affair between the two never happened. The play described him as a farmer in his mid thirties but actually he was a sixty year old tavern keeper. John Proctor, Rebecca Nurse, and Martha Corey weren't all hung on the same day, as described in the play. According to Wikipedia, there's no historical evidence that Abigail knew who John Proctor was before or during the trials. There were accusations made on sixty year old John Proctor that he actually touched the eleven year old Abigail Williams but it was not proven to be true.
John Proctor was married to a woman named Elizabeth. Both John and Elizabeth Proctor were accused of being associated with the devil. At first, Elizabeth was accused because she was an easy target. Her family was well known for being Quakers among Puritan society. When Elizabeth was accused, John Proctor stood up for her and spoke out in the court. During his wife's questioning, he was accused as well of being associated with the devil. John did not want to confess to being a wizard even to save his life because he knew it was a lie. Proctor was in jail for three months before he was hung. Some believe that John Proctor recited the lords prayer before he was hung but there is no solid evidence of him doing this. |
