Real Life VS The Crucible
Giles Corey's real life in comparison to the Crucible was quite different. In The Crucible, Corey talked to John Hale about how he had seen his wife reading strange books. When the girls in the story saw that they were about to be in trouble for what they had done in the woods, they started blaming other people. One of these people were Martha Corey, Giles' wife. Giles stood in front of the court and testified that his wife was a good woman. The judge thought that he and John Proctor were there to overthrow the court. Giles Corey then revealed that he had proof from an honest man who heard Thomas Putnam say that he forced his daughter Ruth to claim witchery on the people that he did not like or get along with. When the judge asked who told Giles that, Giles would not reveal the name of his source. He did not say who it was because he did not want that man thrown in jail with the rest of the people who spoke against the girls. When Giles would not reveal his source, the judge arrested him for contempt of the court. When Giles would not plea innocent or guilty, he was taken away from the court and pressed to death. This meant that they laid him on his back and placed stones on top of his chest until he was not breathing any longer.
In his real life, Giles Corey was accused by the girls and so was his wife. When his wife was falsely accused by the girls, he spoke in court saying that his wife was a good woman. When the girls felt like the court was starting to believe them, they began to accuse him of being a wizard. It was said that Giles was an easy target because he was said to be a violent man. It was documented that Giles had beaten one of his farm workers to death but had avoided the repercussions of the charge. When Giles was convicted of wizardry and decided to stand mute, they stripped him naked and tortured him for three days. This torture method had never been used outside of England and was now used to kill someone who was accused of being a wizard. |
