Arthur Miller portrayed Abigail Williams as a seventeen year old girl. She was the cousin of Betty Parris and the niece of Reverend Parris. Abigail Williams, her cousins, we well as her friends went out into the woods during the night with the slave named Tituba. They were found conjuring spirits by Reverend Parris. Some of the girls were even naked dancing around the fire. When they realized that they had been caught by Parris they all ran away screaming. In order for them to avoid getting in trouble for this, they start to accuse people of witchcraft. Abigail told all of the girls that she would kill them in their sleep if they ever spoke the truth about what had happened. This was enough to support their reasoning for being in the woods even though it was considered to be the devil's territory. As the trial went on, the girls accused many people of witchcraft. Abigail Williams was the ringleader in all of these accusations. Because of Abigail's deep love for John Proctor, she accused his wife of being a witch so that she will hang and Abigail could then have John for herself. During the trial, she stole her uncles money and ran away with Mercy Lewis.
In Abigail's real life, the affair with John Proctor was never proven to have happened. Abigail was only eleven years old at the time. John Proctor on the other hand was sixty years old. Abigail was considered to be the niece of Reverend Parris. But, back in those times, the term "Niece" was usually used to identify a younger female relative. (Lewis) During the trial, Abigail Williams disappeared with nothing but the clothes on her back. There are no documents to explain where Abigail went after that. He death date is also unknown. |
